The auditorium is packed. Thirty-two people of all ages and nationalities are slipping through the door in ones and twos, searching for a good seat, smiling nervously at unfamiliar faces. Most of them are clutching a sheaf of papers, or a notebook, or a binder; class information, hastily scribbled thoughts, reminder notes.
A guy from New Zealand bumps into a girl from Indiana. They apologise, smile, decide to sit together. Everywhere people are grouping up, settling down, preparing for the semester to come.
There’s a sense of expectation, a palpable energy in the room. Positivity, drive, enthusiasm. These people are ready to grow.
Welcome, everyone, to the first day of the Creativity Workshop.
While the whimsical passage above may not be the literal truth, that’s what I see in my mind today. We’re all here for the same purpose, and we’re ready.
This first week is like an orientation week. You won’t be doing any writing, but you will be formulating your goals for the rest of the workshop. The schedule is as follows:
- Monday: Opening day post
- Tuesday: Icebreaker
- Wednesday: Guest post by Simon C. Larter and Carolina Valdez-Miller
- Thursday: Goals example post
- Friday: A short story primer
- Saturday: Prompts and inspiration for the next week
- Sunday: Post your goals.
The rest of the workshop won’t be so post-heavy; it’s just this week. Now let’s talk about your materials list for the workshop.
Your Creativity Toolbox
Humans come readily-equipped with the tools they need to be creative. The three items in your toolbox are:
- Eyes
- Ears
- Brain
That’s it. That’s all you need to be creative.
We all have the tools, but you must train yourself to use them effectively. Every week for the rest of the workshop, I’ll be giving you exercises to help you get better acquainted with your toolbox, and get the most out of your tools. Even if you are already skilled with your creativity toolbox, do take the time to play along.
Next week, in my post “More ideas than you can write”, I will explain the toolbox in more detail. For now, engage all the tools in your toolbox, and get ready to create.
Materials list
I did say originally that you didn’t need to buy anything for this course. But I would like everyone to organise a pen and a small notebook, one small enough to fit into your bag or purse.
For the duration of the workshop, I’d like you to carry this with you everywhere, so you can jot down ideas when they come to you. There will also be field exercises to note down.
And seriously, what writer doesn’t love an excuse to buy new stationary?
Prepping for your goals
If you haven’t already, please start thinking about what you want to achieve during this workshop, as per the Issues and Interests post and post your own list to your blog.
On Thursday, I will give a brief talk about developing effective goals and write my own goals post as an example.
I’d like everyone to have their Issues and Interests posts done by Thursday.
In the meantime, look forward. At the end of the workshop, where do you want to be? Let me know in the comments.
Stay tuned for tomorrow’s icebreaker exercise.
Thank you for allowing me to sign up late! I’ve been reading along and I’m thrilled to be here. I posted my Issues and Interest on my blog under the post titled: I have Issues are you Interested
I’ll work quickly to try and catch up!
OOps I had a busy weekend (not writing), so I guess one of my first goals must surely be to be committed and do something every day. I tend to hit something new running full force and then slowly dwindle back into boredom. I have only written non-fiction and would like to try my hand at different genres as well.
Sounds like you will really be spreading your wings, Gillian!
By the end of the workshop, I want to feel like I’m back in touch with my creativity. It’s as simple as that, really. I’ve been drowning in revisions, and while the editorial part of me enjoys that, my muse is feeling a little sad about it. Hopefully I can keep both sides happy for a while :)
Please don’t ignore your muse! I drowned in revision and I think I must have got reincarnated because I’m here and able to give my muse the attention she needs. I don’t want anyone else to go through that like I did.
Thanks for the warning, Kerryn :) Really hoping that the workshop will help ensure that I start paying more attention to her – don’t want her going into a sulk!
I want to make writing the important aspect of my life that it longs to be. If I can do that I will be complete! (For at least the time being.)
Excellent!
Ha! I’m the student in the back who knows she’s probably in the wrong class but is too enthralled by the awesome teacher to care.
I always carry a notebook around with me! Then if I end up going out with friends and getting drunk, I know that I will have ridiculous drunken scribbles in the notebook and must reread them cringing slightly. :-)
I bet you get some interesting ideas from those drunken scribbles though, Anna!
At the end of the workshop, I hope to have trained myself to focus, and dive right into work, whenever I sit down to write/edit/create. Hopefully, developing that habit will yield sweet fruit: several short stories, which I can polish later. And, I want to be able to easily switch gears so I can continue to make progress editing my novel.
PS: I love any excuse to buy a new notebook. Thank you! ;)
You’re welcome, Kayla. :)
At the end of the workshop I want to be a writer who is confident in my own abilities. I want to be able to write something and not give up because I think it’s stupid, or not good enough. And I want to have that inner editior bound up, crying and rocking back and forth in the corner.
Good! Aim for confidence. No-one can give you that except yourself.
I want to be able to write a first draft of something without stopping to edit and getting frustrated with what I have. I just need to push the story forward regardless of how bad I may think it.
I’m going to schedule my time wisely between classes, this workshop, and another project that I’m working on. I also order my netbook and found my old writing notebook. I’m ready to go!
This workshop has a “no editors allowed” sign on the door. :)
Awww – that NZ / Indiana couple is so cute…
Darn it, I’m so easily distracted! ;-)
I posted on my goals but the short version is I wanna continue closing the gap between me and the writing life. Easy peasy, right?
*impersonates Roy Scheider* I think I’m gonna need a bigger purse…
Easy peasy ;)
I loved your introduction!
Printed off a blank calender, to help get myself organized. Grabbed a notebook and some of my favorite pens. Okay, now I’m ready.
In fourteen weeks I’d like to have learned to give myself time to write everyday, no matter where I’ve been or what I’ve been doing. (I really could use a couple more hands or maybe a few extra hours in the day! :) ) I want to meet some new characters and get to know old ones better. I hope to find some new words. Prehaps even to teach the cat that the computer chair is not a place for afternoon naps. ;)
I think all of those things are achievable, Joy, with the possible exception of the cat. Cats live unto their own laws, and do not heed the wants of mere mortals such as ourselves…
Time to make sure I got all the leads for my pencil that I need. Dust off the writing journal. I’m ready!
Excellent :)
Oh I do so love new stationary, and this is the perfect excuse to blow some of the money that’s all my own, made from selling old books. And who knows, maybe it’ll give me the boost I need this morning!
At the end of the workshop I hope to have a baby who is sleeping more than a few hours at a time. No wait. That’s not a writing goal.
Let me try that again. At the end of my time on the workshop I want to have pushed my boundaries and explored areas that are new to me, and developed some characters/settings/cultures/skills that will set me up for my return to writing post baby.
You all rock, I can’t wait to get to know you all better through this :-)
Lovely Cassie!

Wait, I have to purchase a notebook? AND a pen? :)
I can see you’re really upset about that ;)
I posted my goals today, but I will probably revisit them at some point during the week in order to make sure that they are what I really want to work on. By the end of this workshop, I hope to be a little more disciplined and motivated, with more experience in many different aspects of writing a story (such as genre, characters, and settings). I guess I hope to bring more things into my comfort zone.
I think every writer dreams of being more disciplined and motivated! Good point about getting more “experience”.
I so like the phrasing of that last sentence, Chibi. I, too, want to “bring more things into my comfort zone.” Great way of thinking about it!
I’m so excited about this workshop starting I actually clapped my hands when I clicked the Google Reader NEXT button and it brought me to Opening Day!! The Google Reader Bundle is fantastic too. *waves* at everyone.
At the end of the workshop (and this can also be read as, at the end of the next 14 weeks, because this isn’t all I’m doing to get there) I want to have my writing mojo back. I want to see the world with a creative eye. I want to have more ideas than I know what to do with. I want to have reclaimed my excitement for storytelling.
The bundle is a very helpful little tool! Glad I found it, I must make some more.
I think all of those items you list are achievable, and you’re in the right mindset to do it.
Love your intro. It made me smile. By the end of the workshop I’d like to be absorbed in some new writing rather than working and reworking a number of old ideas like I seem to be doing at the moment. I too have already posted some issues on my blog but I’m sure I can rustle up some more if I have to!
The workshop will definitely help you move onto new projects, Rosalind. In fact you may be buried under them… :)
And we’re off! How exciting :) Great post, by the way. I JUST posted my issues/interests which I combined with the three goals for this workshop. Now that I know that this week is really for developing those main goals I will either edit my post through the week or repost those main goals later on.
Looking forward to it all!
Thanks Aurora! I tried to get to your blog, but it seems to be down. I’ll check again later :)
Yeah all the sites at my host are down. ARGH!! great day for it! I’d say ‘try again in the morning’ but I have no idea when that is for you lol
Thank you for the welcome, Merrilee. I loved the atmospheric bit at the beginning.
Also, I have to thank you for the Google Reader bundle, which is so convenient. I’m now off to circulate and mingle. ;)
You’re welcome, Meredith :)
I want to be sharper, cleaner, disciplined. An unstoppable writing machine. :D
Really looking forward to this.
That sounds scary. My inner SF geek is now imagining a writing robot gone wrong, terrorising the populace… :)
